| Topics, Objectives, Methods: | The Hyper-TVT is a computer-aided education system that has been developed within a project funded by the Filep Fonds of ETH Zurich. The aim of this project is to create an interactive learning environment for chemical and process engineering students, attending the class on separation process technology. The lecture on Thermische Verfahrenstechnik (TVT) constitutes one of the fundamental subjects of the chemical and process engineering course since it shows how the fundamentals of chemical engineering are applied in practice for effective design of processes in industry, particularly of multistage separation processes. The class is taught in the 6th semester of the engineering curriculum. |
| Additional informationen: | The structure of the website is very simple, organized in chapters and paragraphs. Within each paragraph the topic is presented using explaining text, images and interactive diagrams and schemes. Every paragraph develops a certain concept independently and completely, by integrating the multimedia material within the text and by providing the logical links to other pages of the learning environment. The added value of the this web-based educational system is the interactivity offered to the students and educators. In particular pictures, animations, modeling, simulations, videos, and self-assessment tools are dynamic and interactive e-learning opportunities that fit very well to the learning objectives in the domain of Process and Chemical Engineering. The use of the website for the students at ETH Zurich is not a requirement of the separation processes class. The website is presented at the beginning of the class as an additional support and its interactive material and videos are afterwards used during some of the lectures. In this way the students get a first impression of the real world of the separation process technology, and get familiar to the website, thus making it easier and more natural using it for the preparation of the examination. The Hyper-TVT has been realized with a number of tools (php, MySQL, Flash, Javascript, MathML) to maximize interactivity. Videos, animations, pictures, and self-assessment tools improve educational effectiveness and make the learning for the students more interesting and stimulating. The students are better assisted in their self-paced learning, while the lecture time with the teacher can be invested more efficiently to discuss advanced issues and to concentrate on the last steps of the cognitive skills hierarchy, i.e. analysis, synthesis and evaluation. |
| Target group, preconditions: | Students, educators, practitioners and institutions involved in Process and Chemical Engineering education (higher education, vocational training, professional organisations, industry, schools). |
| Programme design: | Hyper-TVT takes full advantage from multimedia and web technology as a didactic support to enhance the teaching effectiveness and flexibility of the two traditional pedagogic media (lecture and textbooks). It offers both educators and students additional tools (videos, animations, simulation programs, images), thus creating a better balance between synchronous and asynchronous approaches to teaching and learning. |
| Medium: | web-based |
| Service and support: | The simple structure of the website, organized in chapters and paragraphs, the links and the interactive modules, make Hyper-TVT easy to be followed also by people, who, though not being chemical or process engineers, still need or want to get a quick and complete overview on separation process technologies. |
| Suitable for self-study: | Hyper-TVT is a didactic support, which is complementary, but still not a replacement of the traditional lecture and of textbooks. However, it offers a complete overview of some of the most important separation processes in chemical engineering. |
| Recommended teaching aids: | Hyper-TVT contains a list of suggested textbooks, handbooks and further readings. |
